Gibbs House - A Proud Beginning

September 1985 marked a defining moment in the history of Worksop College: the opening of Gibbs House, the College’s very first boarding house for girls.

Established in the building formerly known as Talbot, Gibbs House signalled a new and exciting chapter for the school. Although girls had been part of the Worksop College community for around a decade prior to this, boarding opportunities were limited. A small number of girls were accommodated individually - some with staff in East Field, others in the Bungalow used by day staff on leave - and were officially considered part of Derry House. While this arrangement reflected a growing inclusivity, it was clear that a dedicated space for girls was needed.

That vision became a reality in 1985.

Mary Simmonds was appointed as the first Housemistress of Gibbs House, providing leadership and a strong sense of identity from the outset. By June 1986, the house had already grown to 32 girls, with Helen Pearson proudly serving as House Captain - evidence of both the demand for and success of the new boarding provision.

The official opening ceremony took place on 5th October 1985, led by Mr Andrew Gibbs, Custos of Worksop College from 1962 to 1984. It was a fitting tribute that the house was named in his honour. The Gibbs House crest, featuring three battleaxes, carries the powerful motto Tenax Propositi - “hold on to your principles”- a phrase that continues to reflect the values at the heart of the house today.

The opening of Gibbs House marked more than just the addition of a new boarding facility; it represented a significant step forward in the evolution of Worksop College. For the first time, girls’ boarding was fully established - creating a strong foundation for the thriving, inclusive community we see today.
