John joined the College in 1978 from Giggleswick and the University of London to teach Biology and Chemistry, and for nearly 40 years, he was at the very heart of College life. A brilliant teacher, an inspiring leader, and a kind and steady presence, John was Housemaster of Mason House, Commanding Officer of the CCF, Master i/c of Cross Country, and the driving force behind countless Duke of Edinburgh and World Challenge expeditions.
For so many Worksopians, John was more than a teacher - he was a mentor, a role model, and a lifelong influence. His calm wisdom, wry humour, and genuine care for others made him one of those rare individuals who touched every corner of College life. He nurtured excellence both in and out of the classroom, guiding pupils to reach their potential, shaping the character of generations of Old Worksopians.
Those at the College think so highly of John that when we came to name our Extra-Curricular Activity Award - one which celebrates determination, exploration, and discovery - there was only one man it could be named after.
John’s passing will come as a great shock to the many who knew and loved him, and his absence will be deeply felt across our community. Our thoughts are with his wonderful wife, Jane, along with his family and friends during this difficult time.
Details for the memorial service will be shared shortly - we know so many of you will be waiting to attend and celebrate his life.
